She was brought up in a home that valued hard work and education after being born Usha Chilukuri in 1986 to Indian immigrant parents in San Diego, California. Her father is an engineer, and her mother is a biologist who is the provost of the University of California, San Diego. Usha has had a distinguished academic career.
